So you think that you want to make your own beer? You are not the first to have this idea but don’t let that discourage you. Beer is the oldest and most popular alcoholic beverage in the world. Since the dawn of civilization there has always been some type of beer like beverage that people have enjoyed.
In the earliest stages of brewing many things probably happened by chance. Over time this process has become very refined and developed into the modern art of brewing. Today we recognize beer as a fermented beverage containing four main ingredients: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. Malted barley is the most commonly used grain in beer making; however, wheat, corn, and rice are also widely used, usually in conjunction with the barley.
We are fortunate to have many options at the local beer store these days. There are the beers from the large scale breweries that we all know, as well as an ever growing number of choices from microbreweries and brewpubs. In spite of all these choices some of you still want more. You want to be able to make your own beer just the way you want it.
With the rise of brewing supply stores and the increased availability of specialized home brewing supplies and equipment, many beer lovers have decided to try their hand at making their own beer. Much of the home brewing equipment you will need can be found in your home or can be purchased cheaply. Although to make your own beer may at first seem like an intimidating and complex process, with the right equipment, knowledge and instruction, home brewing can be a rewarding way to enjoy your beer just the way you want it.
